The film holds a very special position in the world of anime. At the time of its creation in the 1980s, when it was mainly dominated by genre-based work, it represented a radical departure from the trends of the time. While titles from, for example, Studio Ghibli offered a clear story and an ecological message, Mamoru Oshii took the path of purely original, experimental expression. Angel's Egg is not a classic story, but rather a meditative experience that invites the viewer to interpret and search for meaning in images full of religious and mythological symbolism.
The film returns to cinemas in a restored 4K version.
In a flooded city, a young girl takes care for a large egg, which she holds carefully in her arms. She believes it is the egg of an angel. A boy with a huge gun gets out of a strange car. He's looking for the bird he saw in his dream. In the deserted town, the two characters seem to form a fragile bond, but one night the boy breaks the girl's egg.
