Wake up after a sleepless night, say hello to the neighbours, go to work and spend the whole day making and wrapping fortune cookies. That's what life is like for Dunia, an Afghan immigrant now settled in Fremont, America. Loneliness and insomnia are the problems the young woman tries to solve, first on her own, then with the help of a peculiar therapist. It is not clear whether it is harder to cope with a traumatic past or an uncertain present. Could the solution be a message that Dunia hides in one of thousands of fortune cookies?
A gently wistful comedy with an aesthetic reminiscent of the films of Jim Jarmusch or Aki Kaurismäki, it tells a story about the search for self and whether refugeeism is a condition of the current geographical location or of the mind. And also about the hope that can appear when we least expect it.
