February: what does the gallery do?

26 1 2026 | Author: Barbora Pacíková

What's coming up in February at the Telegraph Gallery?

If you visit the Telegraph Gallery regularly, you will know that our programme goes beyond the gallery space. In addition to long-running exhibitions, there are pop-up exhibitions in the cinema and loft throughout the year, as well as residencies by Czech and international artists, always ending with an Open Studio in their studio. In addition, you can look forward to lecture series focused on the work of contemporary artists, the work of curators, and on contemporary art collecting with collectors, gallerists and curators.

The first month of 2026 is over and we continue with another program in February. This month will also be the last opportunity to visit the Behind the Counter exhibition.

5 2 2026 / 18:00 The Woman Behind the Counter Series and the (Un)Realism of Normalisation Television

Current exhibition Za Pultem (Behind the Counter), by painters Adela Janska, Paulina Olowska and Caroline Walker, directly references the infamous normalization TV series The Woman Behind the Counter in its title. And as the exhibition is coming to an end, it is time to remember the series. After watching the first episode, there will be a lecture by Anna Rufer Bílá, a theoretician from the Department of Television Studies at UPOL, not only about everyday life in normalization series.

19 2 2026 / 18:00 Dernissage / Guided Tour / Catalogue Launch: Behind the Counter

Closing the exhibition in a big way? Of course! A one-night opening reception with a guided tour and the launch of the exhibition catalogue with contributions by Yelena Yemchuk and Joanna Zielinska, edited by Krzystof Gutfrański.

The exhibition Behind the Counter focuses on diverse interpretations of femininity and traces both the real and symbolic presence of women in public space. The exhibition is loosely inspired by the 1970s Czechoslovak television series Woman Behind the Counter. The figurative paintings contrast with the scenographic installation that complements the film work. Through a dialogue between past and present, she explores the cultural legacy of socialism and its echoes in contemporary visual culture.

25 2 2026 / 18:00 Open Studio: Kareema Al-Mukhtar

During January and February, artist Kareema Al-Mukhtar is creating a residency at the Telegraph. The programme traditionally concludes with an Open Studio, where you have the unique opportunity to peer directly into the studio where the artist herself will present her work.

Karíma Al-Mukhtarová studied with Jiří Kovanda at the Faculty of Art and Design in Ústí nad Labem, in Jiří David's Studio of Intermedia Confrontation at the UMPRUM in Prague and in Intermedia with Milena Dopitová at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. She is the winner of the Essel Art Award CEE for the Czech Republic and later completed a several-month internship at CEAAC in Strasbourg, France. She also participated in a prestigious residency at Art Omi in New York. The main themes of her work include questions of identity and the process of socialization of the individual.

We look forward to seeing you!
